Hammanskraal residents were expected to gather on Tuesday afternoon for a community meeting with Tshwane Executive Mayor Dr Nasiphi Moya to discuss persistent concerns over water supply and service delivery in the area.
The meeting, originally scheduled to start at 5:00 pm, faced delays as the mayor was running late due to other engagements and was anticipated to arrive within about 30 minutes. A significant turnout of community members was observed arriving at the venue, with vehicles including taxis and a visible police presence from the Tshwane Metro Police Department (TMPD) on site to manage the gathering.
Residents have expressed ongoing frustration over inconsistent access to clean drinking water, a problem that has persisted for more than two decades. Many in the community continue to rely on water tankers and remain wary of the local supply, despite some individuals reporting no personal issues with consuming it.
A South African Human Rights Commission report previously found that the water in parts of Hammanskraal was unfit for human consumption. The issues trace back to at least 2004, when the Rooiwal wastewater treatment plant reportedly collapsed due to lack of maintenance and neglect.
The crisis gained renewed attention in 2023 with a cholera outbreak in the area that resulted in 23 deaths. Community members attending the meeting hoped Mayor Moya would directly address their concerns, including questions about when reliance on water tankers would end and a permanent solution for clean water would be implemented.
As the gathering took place, rain began falling in Hammanskraal — described by one reporter on the scene as “not the water they are hoping for.” Despite the weather, residents continued to stream into the venue, underscoring the high level of interest in the engagement with city leadership.
The water challenges in Hammanskraal have been a longstanding point of contention, with repeated calls for government intervention to provide a reliable and safe supply. The mayoral meeting represented the latest opportunity for residents to seek answers on service delivery improvements in the area.
