Man Sentenced to 50 Years for Rape and Attempted Rape of Minor

The Calvinia Regional Court sentenced 40-year-old Elton Pieterse to 50 years imprisonment on April 9, 2026, following his guilty plea on multiple charges related to the sexual assault of a minor.

The Namakwa District Management acknowledged the conviction. The court detailed a series of offenses committed in December 2024 against a victim who was 17 years old at the time.

According to the facts presented in court:

  • December 13, 2024: Pieterse entered the family home of the victim. After confirming she was alone, he forced her into a room and raped her.

  • December 17, 2024: Pieterse returned to the home, confirmed the victim was alone again, and committed a second act of rape.

  • December 20, 2024: The victim fell asleep at a relative’s home. Upon waking, she found Pieterse in the room, where he attempted to rape her again.

The abuse came to light in April 2025 when the victim discovered she was pregnant. She subsequently disclosed the incidents to a nurse at a local clinic, initiating the formal investigation and prosecution.

The court imposed the following sentences on the three counts:

  • Count 1 (Rape): 20 years imprisonment.

  • Count 2 (Rape): 20 years imprisonment.

  • Count 3 (Attempted Rape): 10 years imprisonment.

The court ordered that all three counts are to be served concurrently in accordance with Section 280 of the Criminal Procedure Act 51 of 1977, resulting in an effective 20-year term of incarceration.

In addition to the prison sentence, the court ordered that Pieterse’s name be recorded in the National Register for Sex Offenders. Under Section 120(4) of the Children’s Act 38 of 2005, he was deemed unsuitable to work with children and declared unfit to possess a firearm.
