Woman Slashes Firefighter During Welfare Check at San Antonio Off-Campus Housing Complex

San Antonio authorities responded to a welfare check at an off-campus student housing complex that quickly escalated into a violent confrontation and hours-long standoff.

The incident occurred just before 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Lark San Antonio apartment complex, located half a mile from the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) campus across Loop 1604. Apartment management contacted police after being unable to reach a 30-year-old woman inside one of the units for several days. The unit was supposed to have been vacated at the end of March, though the woman had previously resided there.

When first responders attempted to enter the apartment, the situation turned dangerous. According to police, as they tried to breach the door, the woman emerged through the opening and swung a knife, slashing a San Antonio Fire Department firefighter in the hand.

The woman then retreated into a back room of the apartment, prompting a SWAT response. Officers restricted access to part of the complex during the operation. The standoff lasted approximately five hours before the woman was taken into custody.

A UTSA student living at the complex, Kobe Gass, described the scene as chaotic, with residents stepping onto balconies and discussing the unfolding events. “I thought, OK, there’s something serious going on. There’s not going to be 7 cop cars just for no reason,” Gass said. Students attempting to return home via shuttle buses were turned away as authorities blocked off the area.

The incident evoked painful memories for residents of a deadly event at the same complex just months earlier. Gass recalled a previous tragedy: “They fell out of the garage and the entire garage was blocked off. That affected me very deeply.”

Authorities noted that police had responded to the same apartment on multiple prior occasions and that the suspect had been arrested before. Charges in the case remain pending as the investigation continues, including whether the incident involved a mental health emergency.

No further details on the firefighter’s injuries or the woman’s identity were released in the immediate aftermath.
