A federal commission has voted to approve the design concept for a 250-foot triumphal arch that President Donald Trump has proposed as a monument to the nation’s 250th birthday.
The structure would be located between the Lincoln Memorial and Arlington National Cemetery. At 250 feet tall, it would significantly exceed the height of the Lincoln Memorial, which stands at 99 feet, while remaining shorter than the Washington Monument at 555 feet.
During the meeting, one speaker emphasized the monument’s lasting legacy, stating: “Long after everyone in this room is gone, our children and grandchildren will remain inspired by this national monument.”
The U.S. Commission of Fine Arts approved the concept but will review an updated version of the design before holding a final vote. All seven commissioners were appointed by President Trump.
The project aims to commemorate America’s semiquincentennial, with the arch’s height intended as a direct tribute—one foot for each year since independence. The commission’s approval advances the proposal to the next stage of design refinement.
