A 37-year-old man was arrested in the Booysens policing precinct on Tuesday night following a joint operation by the Johannesburg Serious Organised Crime Investigation unit and the Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) K9 Unit.
According to official information, members acted on intelligence and intercepted a vehicle matching the given description on Xavier Street, Booysens. The suspect attempted to flee the scene but was apprehended by law enforcement.
A search of the suspect at the scene revealed three gold nuggets in his possession. Officers subsequently transported the individual to his business premises, where an additional three gold nuggets were discovered.
During the search of the premises, authorities also seized R100,000 in cash, a digital scale, and a money counter.
The total estimated street value of the six gold nuggets recovered is R150,000.
The suspect is currently in detention and is expected to appear in court upon being formally charged.
