Gunman Kills Canadian Tourist, Injures Others at Mexico’s Teotihuacán Pyramids Before Taking Own Life

Mexico City — A gunman opened fire at the ancient Teotihuacán archaeological site, a popular tourist destination just north of Mexico City, killing a Canadian woman and injuring at least four other people on Monday.

The incident occurred around noon at the highly visited pyramids, built by ancient civilizations and recognized as a major historic landmark. According to Mexico’s Security Cabinet, the shooter stood on one of the pyramids and fired randomly at tourists below.

A tour guide at the site told the Associated Press that the shooting triggered immediate panic, with visitors scrambling for safety and some falling down the stairs in the chaos.

Security officials reported that the gunman died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound shortly after the attack. Authorities recovered a gun, a knife, and ammunition at the scene.

The Security Cabinet confirmed the death of the Canadian woman and injuries to at least four others, some from gunshot wounds and others from falls during the ensuing panic. No motive has been publicly disclosed, and the shooter’s identity remains unknown.

The pyramids of Teotihuacán, a UNESCO World Heritage site, attract large numbers of tourists daily for their historical and architectural significance.

Mexican authorities have launched an investigation into the shooting, with additional details expected as the probe continues.
