Dallas Officer Suffers Broken Bones in Violent Attack Before Shooting, Bodycam Video Shows

Dallas police have released body-camera footage revealing a weekend confrontation in which an officer was violently attacked just before discharging his weapon, leaving the officer with multiple facial fractures.

The video documents two separate encounters involving 27-year-old Jeremy Mays on the same night. Initially, Mays was stopped by two Dallas police officers while walking on North Central Expressway. During that brief interaction, a woman pulled up behind the officers; Mays identified her as his ride, entered the vehicle, and the pair drove away.

Approximately ten minutes later, Officer Ashton Rosebud stopped the same vehicle on Preston Road. The footage shows Mays exiting the car and approaching Officer Rosebud. The officer directed him to step back, and Mays stated unprompted that he had no weapons. He then punched Rosebud in the face.

Rosebud fell to the ground and fired his gun twice, striking Mays in the stomach.

At a news conference, police displayed an image of a bloodied Officer Rosebud. According to department officials, Rosebud sustained three broken bones in his face, a broken nose, and required stitches over his eyes, including both internal and external stitches.

“Our officer was violently attacked,” a department spokesperson said. “Punched in the face, has three broken bones in his face along with a broken nose, needed stitches over his eyes, internal stitches and external stitches due to the injuries that occurred.”

Mays has been charged with aggravated assault of a peace officer and remains hospitalized. Officer Rosebud has been released from the hospital and is recovering at home. He is on administrative leave, which the department stated is standard operating procedure.

The investigation into the incident remains ongoing.
