Officer Killed Suspect in Exchange of Gunfire on I-575 in Woodstock

WOODSTOCK, Georgia – A suspect is dead and an officer injured after a pursuit and shootout on Interstate 575 North near the Town Lake Parkway exit, authorities said Tuesday evening.

The incident began around 6:30 p.m. when a Woodstock police officer attempted to make a traffic stop. According to police, the officer initially made contact with the suspect, but the individual—driving a green SUV—fled, sparking a pursuit.

During the chase, Woodstock police said the suspect fired on officers. The pursuit ended at the Town Lake Parkway exit, where the green SUV was spun around. An officer then struck the vehicle head-on.

A witness who spoke with a reporter on the scene described being directly behind the confrontation. She said an officer got behind a black unmarked truck, knelt down, and fired at the suspect, who remained in the driver’s seat of the green SUV. The witness reported seeing glass flying during the shootout and said she quickly drove away to avoid being caught in crossfire.

The suspect was killed in the exchange. An officer was hurt, though Woodstock police declined to specify the nature of the injury.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) is on scene investigating the shooting.

As of late Tuesday night, I-575 northbound at the Town Lake Parkway exit remained closed. The area is typically a busy spot, located near downtown Woodstock. Authorities say many questions remain unanswered as the investigation continues.
