Cherono chasing Personal Best and SA All-Comers Record at Absa RUN YOUR CITY CAPE TOWN 10K

After a strong South African debut at the Absa RUN YOUR CITY GQEBERHA 10K on 1 March, Kenya’s Faith Cherono returns to the Absa RUN YOUR CITY Series with bold ambitions. She will line up at the Absa RUN YOUR CITY CAPE TOWN 10K on Sunday, 10 May 2026, determined to take risks in pursuit of her fastest performance yet.

“It was a good experience and a nice event,” she said when asked about her participation in the Absa RUN YOUR CITY GQEBERHA 10K. “I was happy to join South African athletes and also athletes from all around the world. I felt at home – welcomed, supported.”

That homely feeling allowed the Kenyan to perform at her best. Cherono took second place behind her compatriot and training partner Brenda Jepchirchir in 30:44 – the second fastest 10km clocking of her career. But Jepchirchir will be absent this time around meaning Cherono may have to shoulder much of the workload alone.

“Training is going well. No issues. I am motivated and building one brick at the time. I will miss Brenda, who is very strong. So I hope to have other strong competitors to help and share the load.”

With a world class field of both international and local women expected to line up alongside Cherono, she will have the competition required to bring the best out of her. The 27-year-old  who claimed sixth position in the prestigious Valencia 10K in January, believes that if conditions are right, she can go beyond her 30:06 lifetime best which would be an SA All-Comers record and could also be the very first sub 30 minute 10km clocking by a woman on African soil.

“I am aiming to run a PB and will do my best to push to the limit. I am more interested in running a fast time than trying to win the race or make the podium. My plan is to focus on the time and I’m willing to take the risk.”

Recognising the quality of Cherono’s return and the calibre of athlete she represents, Michael Meyer – Managing Director of Stillwater Sports and Series Founder – emphasised the importance of attracting world-class talent like hers to the Mother City, where elite competition continues to elevate South African road running on the global stage.

“We are excited to welcome Faith Cherono to the start line of the Absa RUN YOUR CITY CAPE TOWN 10K. Her entry adds real depth and international quality to the women’s field and further strengthens what is shaping up to be a world-class race in the Mother City. Cape Town continues to attract some of the finest road runners in the world, and Faith’s participation is a clear reflection of the event’s growing global stature.”
