COBB COUNTY, Georgia – What began as a routine request to check on a resident who hadn’t been heard from in some time ended in tragedy Thursday, as a man took his own life and a woman was found dead following a 7.5-hour standoff with police.
Officers first arrived at a home near Bryant Lane and Rainwater Drive around 8:30 a.m. after receiving a call expressing concern for someone’s welfare. Once on scene, they saw a man moving around inside the residence, but he refused to come outside.
When the man failed to answer the door, police obtained a search warrant. While they were executing that warrant, a gunshot was heard from within the home, prompting the response of the SWAT team.
A Cobb County police spokesperson said the man later fired a shot toward the SWAT team, and officers returned fire, wounding the suspect. A drone deployed inside the home allowed authorities to confirm the man was still alive after that exchange.
“During that time when they had the perimeter established around the house, several call out attempts were attempted. And then another round was fired inside the residence towards the officers,” the spokesperson said. “At some point following that, an officer involved shooting took place, and the suspect was wounded.”
The spokesperson added that officers continued trying to establish communication, but “he again refused to comply and at some point he ended up taking his own life.”
Once officers finally entered the home, they found the man had died from a self-inflicted gunshot. A woman was also discovered dead inside.
Authorities have not yet determined the relationship between the man and the woman, nor how the woman died. No officers were injured in the incident.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is en route to examine the officer-involved shooting.
