On 28 March 2021, Detective Sergeant Kgabo Albertina Mabotja of the SAPS Rabie Ridge responded to a murder complaint in Mayibuye. The victim was declared dead on arrival at Tembisa Hospital.
According to police reports, two young males had a fight in a tavern. After the altercation, both went to their respective homes to call their brothers. One returned with two brothers, the other with one brother. They met on the street, and the fight resumed. During the ensuing violence, one brother was assaulted and stabbed by one of the two brothers who had come to assist their sibling.
The victim was taken to hospital but died on arrival. Detective Sergeant Mabotja visited the scene and established that the suspects were known to the community and resided in the same area, Mayibuye, as the deceased. Initial attempts to trace the suspects were unsuccessful because community members were angry and seeking revenge. After learning that police were looking for them, the suspects surrendered voluntarily at SAPS Rabie Ridge.
The three accused were detained at SAPS Rabie Ridge on charges of murder and assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm (GBH). They were denied bail.
Following an investigation led by Detective Sergeant Mabotja, the Tembisa Magistrate’s Court on 28 April 2026 found all three accused guilty. They were sentenced to 15 years’ imprisonment for murder and assault with GBH.
