Police Arrest Suspect in Wells Estate Mass Shooting That Killed Three

The Eastern Cape Provincial Serious and Violent Crime Investigation Unit has arrested 27-year-old Lukhanyo Mekula, a person of interest linked to a mass shooting in Wells Estate, Gqeberha, on 26 April 2026.

The shooting occurred in Msinga Street, Wells Estate, following an alleged altercation between occupants of two vehicles. One driver left the scene and reportedly threatened to return. Shortly thereafter, the suspect allegedly confronted and shot a homeowner outside his residence, then entered the house and opened fire on those inside.

The attack resulted in three fatalities: Maxhosa Nombana (30), Mxolisi Maswana (60), and Donricque Scheepers (19), who later died in hospital. Six other victims sustained serious injuries and are receiving medical treatment.

Through intensive investigations, detectives also linked Mekula to a separate case of attempted murder, robbery with aggravating circumstances, and malicious damage to property committed in Motherwell during February 2023. That case involved the hijacking of a state vehicle, which was later found burnt in Ikamvelihle.

On Monday, 18 May 2026, Mekula voluntarily presented himself at the police station accompanied by his lawyer. A J50 warrant of arrest had already been issued by the Motherwell Magistrate’s Court. He appeared before the Motherwell Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, 19 May 2026, and has been formally charged with:

  • Three counts of murder

  • Seven counts of attempted murder

  • Robbery with aggravating circumstances

  • Malicious damage to property

The accused abandoned his bail application. The case has been remanded to 26 June 2026 for further investigation.
