Court Sentences Vehicle Thief to Three Years

The Douglas Regional Court on Monday sentenced 27-year-old Jan Molai to three years’ imprisonment for theft of a motor vehicle. The court also declared Molai unfit to possess a firearm.

The conviction stems from an incident on 4 October 2024. At approximately midday, the complainant secured his residence in Plooysburg and left for a weekend vacation. His employee, Jan Molai, stole the complainant’s double cab Ford Ranger Wildtrak bakkie in Plooysburg and was later involved in an accident.

Douglas police contacted the complainant on Sunday, 6 October 2024 at approximately 10:30, informing him that his vehicle had been involved in a crash.

Investigations revealed that the complainant’s house had been broken into and the vehicle keys stolen.

Molai was arrested after receiving medical treatment for injuries sustained in the accident. He was released on bail until the finalisation of the case on 18 May 2026, when the court delivered the sentence.
