Law enforcement officials have taken a 45-year-old man into custody on Sunday, 24 May 2026, in connection with a fatal shooting that left one person dead and another injured in Vaalbank Extension.
The incident unfolded on Saturday, 23 May 2026, at approximately 21:30, when police received an emergency call reporting gunfire in the area. Responding officers arrived to find a 36-year-old woman suffering from gunshot wounds to her upper body. Emergency medical personnel pronounced her deceased at the scene.
A 34-year-old man, who was nearby during the incident, was also struck by gunfire and sustained injuries.
Early investigative findings suggest the suspect initiated contact with the deceased, leading to a verbal altercation. The situation reportedly escalated when the suspect produced a firearm and discharged it, striking both victims.
Following a coordinated effort, detectives tracked the suspect to a shack in the Kameelpoort vicinity, where he was apprehended without incident. Authorities recovered a licensed firearm from his possession; no ammunition was found with the weapon.
The accused is set to make his first court appearance at the Mbibane Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 25 May 2026, where he will formally face charges of murder and attempted murder.
