A 30-year-old tavern owner from Lower Ngxaxha locality, Maqhubini A/A, has been arrested and charged with murder following the death of a 34-year-old patron from Milani locality in an alleged dispute over an unpaid liquor bill.
The incident occurred on Monday, 25 May 2026, at approximately 09:30.
According to police reports, the tavern owner allegedly fetched the victim from his homestead and then assaulted him inside the tavern, which included knocking him against a wall. The altercation reportedly stemmed from an undisclosed amount of money owed for liquor.
Emergency services were called to the scene after the victim lost consciousness. He was later pronounced dead.
The suspect was arrested and is due to appear before the Qumbu Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, 26 May 2026.
Acting OR Tambo District Commissioner, Brigadier Vukile Ntuli, said he was shocked by the killing.
“It is a very sad situation that someone had to die for allegedly owing someone money. Police must leave no stone unturned in bringing a watertight case before the court of law for justice to be served,” Brigadier Ntuli said.
He extended his heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of the deceased.
