Senior African National Congress (ANC) representatives visited multiple communities throughout the O.R. Tambo District Municipality in the Eastern Cape this week as part of a provincial outreach initiative aimed at reconnecting with grassroots supporters.
During town hall-style engagements in Mata and surrounding areas, local residents raised urgent concerns about prolonged housing delays, deteriorating infrastructure, and what they characterized as a breakdown in accountable governance. Community spokespersons reported that many families remain in temporary shelters months after severe flooding destroyed homes and displaced households across the region.
“Communities across the province say they have lost hope in government,” stated local community spokespersons during the engagements. They emphasized that event participation was predominantly elderly residents, prompting questions about youth engagement and broader community mobilization efforts.
Provincial ANC spokespersons acknowledged that systemic weaknesses within municipal structures continue to undermine service delivery effectiveness. In responses to community questions, leadership outlined proposed intervention strategies, noting that consistent implementation of these measures across Eastern Cape municipalities could produce visible improvements in basic service provision.
Community spokespersons confirmed they are actively seeking definitive commitments from provincial leadership regarding timelines for permanent housing construction for flood-affected families. While residents expressed appreciation for the direct engagement opportunity, several local representatives cautioned that repeated dialogues without follow-through have diminished public confidence.
“The outreach is a step forward, but communities need to see action, not just words,” noted community spokespersons following the engagements. Provincial leadership reiterated that addressing service delivery bottlenecks remains a priority and that sustained collaboration between local and provincial structures is essential for meaningful change.
The O.R. Tambo district engagements form part of a wider provincial effort to assess grassroots sentiment and recalibrate service delivery approaches ahead of upcoming electoral cycles.
