Six individuals aged between 18 and 40 are in custody following a successful police intervention in Lourierpark on Sunday, 31 May 2026, which culminated in the rescue of a 35-year-old kidnapping victim and the seizure of two vehicles bearing Lesotho registration plates.
The operation unfolded during #OperationShanela2 when SAPS Parkweg Client Service Centre members, conducting routine patrols at approximately 02:00, identified two suspicious stationary silver vehicles. As officers moved to investigate, one vehicle accelerated and fled the scene. Police immediately blocked and secured the second vehicle, taking two occupants into custody.
Simultaneously, a Bloemfontein Flying Squad unit, alerted to the fleeing vehicle, initiated a pursuit. The suspect car was intercepted and cornered on a nearby street, resulting in the arrest of four additional male suspects.
During a search of the intercepted vehicle, officers discovered a 35-year-old male victim sustaining serious injuries. Initial questioning established that the man had allegedly been forcibly removed from his shack in front of family members after being accused of damaging a window. He was then subjected to a severe assault by the suspects.
Emergency services transported the victim to a local medical facility, where he is currently listed in serious but stable condition.
All six arrested individuals now face formal charges including kidnapping, attempted murder, and malicious damage to property. The two silver vehicles involved have been impounded as part of the evidentiary process.
The suspects are slated to make their first appearance in the Bloemfontein Magistrate’s Court pending finalization of charges. SAPS highlighted the effectiveness of inter-unit coordination and rapid response protocols in securing a positive outcome for the victim and advancing the criminal investigation.
