In an official communication dated Monday, the RTMC stressed two critical safety priorities: zero tolerance for alcohol-impaired driving and careful adaptation to variable road environments. “Motorists are strongly encouraged to refrain from operating vehicles while under the influence and to remain mindful of prevailing road conditions throughout their journeys,” the statement read.

Gauteng Province – Early Morning Tragedy
Around 3:00 a.m. on Sunday, a collision on Old Randfontein Road in Kagiso, near Mogale City, left five people dead. A bakkie struck the rear of a hatchback; all five deceased were passengers in the hatchback. The bakkie driver emerged without injury.
North West Province – Multi-Vehicle Collision
Shortly before midnight on Thursday, a minibus towing a trailer and transporting 13 passengers collided with a truck at the junction of the R500 and R42 routes in Buffelshoek. The impact claimed nine lives: six men, one woman, and one girl perished at the scene, while a ninth victim later succumbed to injuries in a medical facility.
Limpopo Province – Median Crossing Incident
On Friday, a head-on collision on the N1 highway near Nyl Plaza resulted in five fatalities. According to preliminary reports, a minibus crossed the central median into the opposing lane, colliding directly with an oncoming truck.
Free State Province – High-Impact Crash
Another Sunday incident unfolded on the N1 corridor between Kroonstad and Heuningspruit. A minibus and a Ford Ranger collided head-on. Four occupants of the minibus, unable to escape the wreckage, suffered fatal burns. A fifth fatality occurred when a passenger from the bakkie later passed away in hospital due to crash-related injuries.
Ongoing Investigations and Preventive Guidance
The RTMC confirmed that forensic and operational investigations into each crash remain active. While definitive causes are yet to be finalized, early assessments point to potential contributing factors including reduced visibility, driver fatigue, excessive speed, and possible substance impairment.
