SAWS Issues Severe Weather Alert: Cut-Off Low to Bring Cold, Wet Conditions to Southern South Africa

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a multi-day severe weather warning for the central and southern regions of the country, as a deepening cut-off low-pressure system combines with an approaching cold front to deliver cold, wet, and windy conditions starting Wednesday.

According to the meteorological agency’s Monday briefing, the system is expected to propagate eastward across South Africa from Wednesday before exiting the country toward the weekend, bringing with it the risk of localized flooding, disruptive rainfall, and hazardous marine conditions.

Weather Outlook: Day-by-Day

Tuesday
Fine conditions are forecast for the eastern interior. Elsewhere, skies will be partly cloudy and cool to cold, with isolated to scattered showers expected along the Western Cape coast, adjacent interior, and western parts of the Eastern Cape.

Wednesday to Thursday
Cloudy, cold, and unsettled conditions will prevail. Showers and thundershowers—initially scattered—are expected to intensify and spread across the southern coastal belt and adjacent interior. Heavy downpours may trigger flash flooding, particularly in vulnerable areas. Snowfall is possible over the higher-altitude regions of the Eastern Cape.

A cold front is expected to slip south of the country, with a cut-off low deepening west of the country, which is expected to propagate eastwards across South Africa from Wednesday and finally exit the country towards the weekend,” SAWS stated.

Active Weather Warnings

SAWS has activated the following alerts for Wednesday and Thursday:

🔴 Disruptive Rainfall & Flood Risk
Heavy rain may endanger lives, inundate roads and bridges, cause rivers to rise rapidly, and force closures of major transport routes. High-risk areas include:
– Eastern Garden Route District (Western Cape)
– Coastal and interior corridors between Plettenberg Bay and East London (Eastern Cape)

🔴 Localized Flooding
Settlements, low-lying areas, roadways, and bridges in parts of the eastern Western Cape and southern Eastern Cape remain susceptible to sudden flooding.

🔴 Hazardous Marine Conditions
Damaging winds and elevated wave heights may disrupt operations at small harbors and complicate navigation for small vessels and personal watercraft between Cape Point and Plettenberg Bay.

🔴 Extreme Weather Exposure
Very cold, wet, and windy conditions are forecast for:
– Central and eastern interior of the Western Cape
– Southern Namakwa District (Northern Cape)
– Parts of the Eastern Cape
