Police Neutralize Two Armed Robbery Suspects in KwaMsane Gun Battle; Third Hospitalised

A pre-dawn police operation on Tuesday, 02 June 2026, resulted in the deaths of two suspected armed robbers and the hospitalisation of a third following an intense shootout in KwaMsane just after midnight. No law enforcement personnel sustained injuries during the exchange.

The sequence of events commenced when Hluhluwe police responded to a robbery report filed by a male victim who was accosted by armed suspects within the Hluhluwe policing jurisdiction. Acting on the victim’s description, officers identified a suspect vehicle travelling southbound along the N2 highway and initiated a pursuit. Reinforcements from the uMkhanyakude District Task Team were deployed to assist in the operation.

The high-speed chase progressed from the Hluhluwe area into KwaMsane, where suspects opened fire on pursuing officers, prompting a return of gunfire. Initial assessments indicated that three suspects had been fatally wounded at the scene. However, during forensic documentation of the incident, one suspect regained consciousness and was immediately transported to a medical facility under armed police supervision. The remaining two suspects were confirmed deceased at the location.

Authorities recovered three firearms from the suspects involved in the confrontation. Investigators have confirmed that at least three additional individuals linked to the incident escaped apprehension and are currently the subject of an active manhunt.

The hospitalised suspect remains in custody under police guard while receiving medical treatment. The two deceased suspects will be subjected to post-mortem examinations as part of standard investigative procedure.

Police spokespersons highlighted the coordinated response between local officers and the District Task Team, emphasising ongoing efforts to address violent crime in the region. The investigation into the original robbery and the subsequent police engagement continues.
