MEADOWLANDS, Soweto — Provincial education and law enforcement authorities have issued urgent appeals for calm and accountability following the fatal assault of an 18-year-old learner at Forth Hare Secondary School.
The student was attacked yesterday by individuals allegedly linked to a rival group and sustained critical injuries from a panga. He was rushed to a nearby clinic in a private vehicle but later died from his wounds.
Capt Tintswalo Sibeko, spokesperson for SAPS Gauteng, confirmed the details of the incident: “The victim sustained severe injuries and was transported to a local clinic in a private vehicle for medical treatment. He later succumbed to his injuries.” Sibeko stated that police are actively searching for those responsible, no arrests have been made, and the motive remains under investigation.
Lebogang Maile, Gauteng Education MEC, voiced the province’s outrage and sorrow. “As a province, we are deeply saddened and disturbed by this incident. No child should lose their life to violence and no family should have to endure such pain. We trust that law enforcement authorities will leave no stone unturned in ensuring that those responsible are brought to justice.”
In the aftermath, the Johannesburg West Education District held an early-morning meeting with parents to confront the growing challenge of gang-related activity affecting students. Emotions ran high outside the school as some learners expressed anger and called for retaliation. Parents stressed the importance of unity and prevention, highlighting that this tragedy is part of a recurring pattern. One parent shared a personal account: “We also have a case of my little nephew. He was affected by this gangsterism thing while he was going to write. The case is still ongoing.”
Education officials have reiterated that schools must remain sanctuaries for learning and have urged the community to support investigative efforts. The Gauteng Education Department condemned the killing in the strongest terms and called on police to dedicate all available resources to identifying and prosecuting the perpetrators.
Authorities continue to appeal for public assistance as the investigation moves forward.
