Bloemspruit Detective Commended as Family Friend Receives 24-Year Sentence for Brutal Murder and Theft

he Free State Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Thabang Lesia, has commended Detective Sergeant Sechaba Tsholo of the Bloemspruit Detective Unit following the successful conviction and sentencing of a 35-year-old man for the brutal murder of a 41-year-old woman and the subsequent theft and sale of her property.

The incident occurred on Monday, 11 August 2025, at approximately 20:40, when Bloemspruit police responded to a complaint at Phase 9, near a local petrol garage. Upon arrival, officers discovered the lifeless body of a woman inside a bedroom. The victim had sustained multiple stab wounds to the head.

The deceased was identified as Dipuo Conny Saohatse (41), found dressed in a pink jacket, nightdress, and shoes. Emergency Medical Services personnel attended the scene and certified her death.

A murder case was immediately registered, and an intensive search for the perpetrator commenced. The investigation was assigned to Detective Sergeant Tsholo, who swiftly pursued all available leads.

Through diligent investigative work—including forensic analysis and the gathering of local intelligence—Sergeant Tsholo established that the perpetrator was a trusted family friend of the deceased. Further investigation revealed that, after committing the murder, the suspect stole the victim’s motor vehicle, loaded it with plasma television sets and other household electronic items, and subsequently sold the stolen property.

Demonstrating exceptional dedication and professionalism, Sergeant Tsholo successfully traced and arrested the suspect within two days of the murder. All stolen items, including the victim’s motor vehicle, were recovered.

The suspect, Mojalefa Hermanas Tsoenyane (35), was charged with murder, theft, and theft of a motor vehicle. Following a thorough trial, during which the State presented compelling evidence gathered through the investigation, Tsoenyane was found guilty on all charges and sentenced to 24 years’ direct imprisonment.

Lieutenant General Lesia welcomed the sentence, describing it as a significant victory in the fight against violent crime and gender-based violence.

“This sentence sends a strong message that those who commit acts of violence, particularly against women, will be relentlessly pursued and brought to justice,” said Lieutenant General Lesia. “The dedication and professionalism displayed by Detective Sergeant Tsholo exemplify the commitment of our members to ensuring justice for victims and safer communities for all.”

The successful resolution of this case underscores the South African Police Service’s ongoing commitment to combating violent crime and delivering accountability through thorough, professional investigative work.
