A 22-year-old serial offender, Simphiwe Xolani Mkhwanazi, has been handed life imprisonment and decades behind bars for a brutal string of violent offenses committed in the Amersfoort policing area between 2021 and 2023.
The sentencing was delivered by the Mpumalanga Division of the High Court, sitting in Amersfoort, on Friday, June 5, 2026. It follows a rigorous police investigation that culminated in Mkhwanazi’s conviction on multiple charges on May 27, 2026.
Holding the offender accountable for his vicious crime spree, the High Court handed down the following sentences across 10 separate counts:
Count 1 (Kidnapping): 5 years imprisonment
Count 2 (Rape): 20 years imprisonment
Count 3 (Murder): Life imprisonment
Count 4 (Defeating or obstructing the administration of justice): 5 years imprisonment
Count 5 (Rape): Life imprisonment

Count 7 (Rape): 15 years imprisonment
Count 8 (Robbery with aggravating circumstances): 20 years imprisonment
Count 9 (Rape): 15 years imprisonment
Count 10 (Robbery with aggravating circumstances): 20 years imprisonment
In addition to the lengthy prison terms, the court ordered that Mkhwanazi’s name be entered into the South African National Register for Sex Offenders, officially declaring him unfit to work with children.
Major General (Dr) Zeph Mkhwanazi, the Acting Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service (SAPS) in Mpumalanga, praised the verdict, commending the dedicated efforts of the investigation team, the prosecution, and the judiciary.
Major General Mkhwanazi stated that the ruling serves as a stern warning to criminals. “We hope that this sentence will send a strong message that perpetrators of violent crimes, particularly those committed against women and vulnerable members of society, will face the full might of the law,” he said.
Reaffirming the police force’s ongoing dedication to protecting the public, the Acting Commissioner added, “The SAPS remains committed to combating Gender-Based-Violence and Femicide wherever it raises its ugly head.”
