Police Intercept White Mazda in Kroonstad, Seize R7,800 in Suspected Stolen Copper

Three individuals are in custody following a tactical police operation that uncovered a large cache of suspected stolen copper cable.

The operation took place on Friday, 05 June 2026, at around 08:00. Authorities acted on a tip-off regarding a white Mazda traveling from Steynsrus into Kroonstad, allegedly transporting copper cable for sale. Officers successfully intercepted the vehicle during the coordinated intervention.

A subsequent search of the vehicle, which had three occupants, led to the confiscation of 41 kilograms of copper cable. Authorities have estimated the value of the seized metal at R7,800.

Following the discovery, the three suspects—aged between 40 and 41—were arrested. They are currently being held on dual charges of possession of suspected stolen property, as well as tampering with, damaging, or destroying essential infrastructure.

The trio is scheduled to make an appearance before the Kroonstad Magistrate’s Court soon to formally face the charges.
