Bloemfontein Court Imposes Multiple Life Sentences on Mother and Partner for Horrific Abuse of Three Children

A Free State mother and her partner have been condemned to multiple life terms behind bars after a regional court found them guilty of raping, sexually exploiting, and assaulting three young girls.

The Bloemfontein Regional Court handed down the heavy sentences to the 33-year-old woman and her 36-year-old boyfriend, concluding a case that Free State SAPS Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Thabang Lesia described as a shocking betrayal of maternal trust and protection.

The 36-year-old male accomplice was handed three life sentences for rape. The biological mother received three life terms for rape, an additional 20 years for sexual exploitation, and three years for common assault. In addition to their extensive prison time, both convicts have been barred from working with children, declared unfit to own firearms, and slated for inclusion on the National Register for Sex Offenders.

The horrific ordeal began on November 17, 2023, at a home in Bergman Square, Bloemspruit. The mother had dropped off her 14-year-old daughter at her boyfriend’s residence. After cooking a meal, the boyfriend raped the sleeping teenager multiple times. When the mother retrieved her child the next morning, she callously brushed off the victim’s disclosures about the assault.

The court also heard that the mother’s complicity escalated over time. On later occasions, she actively facilitated the sexual abuse of her 11-year-old daughter and 10-year-old niece by the boyfriend, even going so far as to watch him assault one of the children.

The abuse was finally brought to an end when the children’s 30-year-old uncle uncovered the atrocities and immediately alerted the Bloemspruit Police. Initial charges of rape, sexual exploitation, and common assault were opened locally before the docket was handed over to the specialized Mangaung Family Violence, Child Protection, and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit.

Under the meticulous guidance of Detective Sergeant Nthabiseng Ranthako, and in close coordination with National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) Prosecutor Cwele, the suspects were successfully tracked and arrested.

Reflecting on the outcome, Lieutenant General Lesia lauded Detective Sergeant Ranthako and the NPA prosecution team for their exemplary dedication. He emphasized that securing these severe sentences ensures the predators are permanently removed from society, delivering an uncompromising warning that the sexual exploitation and abuse of vulnerable minors will not be tolerated.
