The Gauteng police leadership has initiated an urgent investigation after a video circulating on social media captured two officers allegedly soliciting a bribe from a suspect.
The incident in question occurred on June 4, 2026. The two officers were deployed at the Wierdabrug policing precinct as part of the Provincial Operation Shanela. According to the South African Police Service (SAPS), the officers intercepted a man riding a bicycle and confiscated the bike. They subsequently placed the suspect inside a police vehicle and drove him to the Wierdapark community park, where they allegedly collected money from him in exchange for his release.
Following the widespread circulation of the footage, SAPS management confirmed that both implicated officers have been identified. A formal departmental case has been opened against them, and an official inquiry has been registered to establish the exact facts surrounding the event. The police service stated that all allegations will be thoroughly scrutinized as part of the launched investigation.
In response to the incident, SAPS Gauteng is renewing its call for public cooperation in the fight against police fraud and corruption. While the police acknowledged that social media plays a vital role in raising awareness and exposing misconduct, they stressed that online exposure must be followed by formal reporting. Authorities emphasized that formal reports are necessary to obtain statements under oath, which are crucial for building robust cases that can withstand trial and ensure that corrupt perpetrators are appropriately prosecuted.
Members of the public are strongly encouraged to report police misconduct through the following official channels:
The SAPS Anti-Corruption Hotline: 0800 701 701
The National Service Complaints Centre: 0800 333 177
The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID): The statutory body that operates independently of SAPS to investigate police offenses.
