SERITHING VILLAGE — A 46-year-old male suspect was shot and arrested on the morning of Friday, 19 June 2026, in Serithing village within the Rakgoadi policing area, following an altercation with law enforcement. The suspect is facing charges of assault on police and resisting arrest.
The operation was conducted jointly by the Gauteng Provincial Mabopane Detectives Unit and Rakgoadi Police. Detectives had enlisted local assistance to track down the suspect, who was wanted in connection with a carjacking and the possession of a stolen motor vehicle that occurred in the Mabopane precinct in May 2021.
Upon arriving at a residence in Serithing village, the suspect’s sister identified him to the authorities while he was asleep in bed. As police approached, the suspect abruptly uncovered his blanket, leaped from the bed, and crashed through a bedroom window, falling outside in an attempt to flee.
Officers stationed outside attempted to apprehend him, but the suspect broke free and ran toward a nearby kraal. As police tactically pursued him, the suspect turned and began physically assaulting the officers. Despite receiving verbal warnings to stop, the suspect continued the assault and armed himself with a steel pipe, attempting to strike a police member.
In response, police fired a warning shot. When the suspect continued to advance, officers shot him in the leg in self-defense. The suspect subsequently dropped the steel pipe and was arrested on the scene.
The suspect was transported to a hospital for medical treatment and remains admitted under police guard. Due to his medical status, he is expected to appear before the Motetema Magistrate’s Court in absentia on Monday, 22 June 2026, to face the charges of assault on police and resisting arrest.
Police investigations into the incident remain ongoing.
