MK Party Volunteers Murdered in Bekkersdal: Gauteng Branch Vows to Win Ward in Their Honour

BEKKERSDAL, GAUTENG — The tragic murder of two MK Party volunteers in Bekkersdal has sent shockwaves through the local political landscape, prompting the Gauteng branch to pledge a dedicated campaign to win the ward in memory of the slain men. Gauteng MK Party spokesperson Andile Chalwe confirmed the devastating loss, emphasizing the party’s unwavering resolve to continue their democratic duties despite the violence.

The deceased, a 38-year-old and a 48-year-old man, were returning from a voter registration weekend drive when the fatal ambush occurred. Clarifying their exact roles, Chalwe stressed that the victims were dedicated party volunteers working at a local voting station, explicitly dismissing early reports that they were councillor candidates.

The two men were on foot, walking in full MKP regalia, as the voting station was located very close to their residences. They were brutally gunned down on the spot just 200 meters away from their homes in the Section X area.

Robbery Ruled Out as SAPS Investigates

As the South African Police Service (SAPS) opens a murder inquest, authorities are urging any eyewitnesses in the community to come forward and assist with the investigation.

While political assassinations can sometimes be linked to opportunistic crimes, Chalwe confirmed that robbery was definitively ruled out. The victims’ families verified that all personal belongings, including wallets and cell phones, were left completely untouched on their bodies.

The spokesperson described the victims as inseparable comrades and prominent community leaders who had been serving side-by-side since 2024. Their deep roots in the community have only amplified the local grief surrounding the senseless killings.

Refusal to Speculate on Political Motives

The brutal murders have naturally raised concerns about political violence, especially given the high stakes of local government elections. In South Africa’s challenging economic climate, councillor positions are highly sought after for the salaries they provide, leading observers to frequently point to intra-party factionalism or rival political violence during election seasons.

When pressed on whether the party suspected the killings were tied to internal competition or political rivalries, Chalwe firmly refused to entertain speculation. He stated that the MK Party is placing its absolute trust in SAPS and the justice system to uncover the truth.

Chalwe stressed that making assumptions at this stage would be unfair and unhelpful, noting that the immediate priority for the party is ensuring a safe, free, and fair electoral process for all citizens.

Community Morale Remains Defiant

Despite the profound grief and the shock of the brutal attack, the MK Party’s provincial leadership conducted a solidarity visit to the Section X ward and the broader sub-region to console their members.

Chalwe reported that the community received the party leaders with open arms. Far from being intimidated, the remaining volunteers remain highly motivated. The local branches have reportedly resolved to channel their sorrow into action, declaring their readiness to hit the ground running and campaign vigorously.

According to Chalwe, the party’s ultimate goal is to secure a decisive victory in the Bekkersdal ward as a lasting tribute to the two volunteers who lost their lives in the line of political duty.
