STANDERTON — A 55-year-old man was arrested on Saturday, 20 June 2026, for possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition, the South African Police Service (SAPS) confirmed.
The arrest followed intelligence received by police regarding an individual in possession of an illegal firearm at Grootdraai Dam in Standerton. Acting on the information, officers conducted a follow-up operation and located a suspect matching the provided description.
After identifying themselves, police searched the suspect and his belongings. During the search, officers recovered a 9mm firearm and 22 rounds of live ammunition from a bag in the suspect’s possession.
The suspect was unable to produce a valid firearm license or provide a lawful explanation for possessing the items. He was subsequently arrested and formally charged with possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition. The recovered firearm and ammunition have been seized and will form part of the ongoing investigation.
The suspect is scheduled to appear before the Standerton District Court on Monday, 22 June 2026.
