Police Open Inquest Following Fatal Shack Fire in Koffiefontein

KOFFIEFONTEIN – Police have opened an inquest docket following a fatal shack fire in the Nuwe Erwe area of Koffiefontein on Monday, 22 June 2026.

At approximately 03:30, authorities responded to reports of a burning shack located near a local crèche. Upon arrival, officers found the structure engulfed in flames. A mine fire truck was dispatched to the scene and successfully extinguished the blaze.

Emergency Medical Services (EMS) personnel discovered a male victim lying near the door of the shack, suffering from severe burn wounds. EMS pronounced the man dead at the scene.

The body was subsequently removed by Forensic Pathology services. The victim’s identity remains unconfirmed pending the results of a post-mortem examination.

The cause of the fire is currently unknown, and police investigations into the incident are ongoing.
