JOHANNESBURG — The Gauteng police management has addressed a video circulating on social media that falsely claims foreign nationals are attacking South African citizens in Mayfair, Johannesburg.
Authorities confirmed that the footage is not recent, having been originally captured during the looting protests in 2021.
Law enforcement warned that the distribution of unverified content fuels public panic, risks inciting violence, and undermines ongoing government and police efforts to maintain peace and uphold the law.
The police have urged the public to use social media responsibly and to verify the authenticity of all content before posting or forwarding it.
