PRETORIA, Gauteng — The South Africa Smart ID bank rollout has reached a historic milestone, with the Department of Home Affairs confirming that 203 financial branches are now fully operational under a groundbreaking digital partnership model.
Since the initiative officially launched on 9 March, more than a quarter of a million citizens have already utilized these newly accessible locations to secure their replacement Smart ID cards.
A Massive Leap in Service Accessibility
The integration of the banking sector represents a dramatic shift in how the government delivers identity services. Under the legacy framework, South Africans could only access Smart ID replacements at 248 dedicated Home Affairs offices and a mere 32 bank branches.
By activating an additional 203 bank locations in just over three months, the government has successfully expanded public access to this critical service by 73%. This unprecedented scaling is accelerating the phase-out of the vulnerable Green ID Book, a legacy document that remains highly susceptible to forgery and identity theft.
Currently, an estimated 16 million South Africans still rely on the outdated Green ID Book. President Cyril Ramaphosa has publicly stressed that transitioning the population to the biometric Smart ID card is a national imperative. Doing so is vital for fortifying the country’s identity infrastructure, shielding citizens from financial and identity fraud, and securing the national population register that forms the bedrock of citizenship, immigration control, and overall national security.
Driving this massive transition is the “Home Affairs @ home” reform programme, which is facilitating the modernization of identity services at a scale never before seen in the country.
Five-Minute Biometric Processing
The newly activated network of 203 branches comprises:
- 109 Capitec branches
- 74 Standard Bank branches
- 20 FNB branches
The in-branch experience has been radically simplified. Applicants can now complete a Smart ID application in as little as five minutes. The streamlined workflow is entirely biometric, completely eliminating the need for physical paperwork or advance booking systems, while simultaneously removing any room for human discretion or irregularities.
Home Affairs officials have described this milestone as the most significant reform and expansion of public service access since the dawn of South Africa’s democracy.
Minister Schreiber Hails “Remarkable Achievement”
Home Affairs Minister Dr. Leon Schreiber praised the rapid adoption of the service, highlighting the efficiency of the public-private partnership.
“Reaching more than 200 participating bank branches and processing over 250,000 transactions in just over three months since the launch of this project is a remarkable achievement and a powerful demonstration of the progress being made through our Home Affairs @ home reform programme,” Minister Schreiber stated. “Smart ID replacement services are now closer to all South Africans than ever before.”
Ambitious Upgrades on the Horizon
The department is not slowing down. Minister Schreiber revealed that the current success is just the beginning of a much broader digital transformation strategy for the banking channels.
“In the context of this spectacular progress, I am excited to share that there is much more still to come,” Schreiber announced. “Not only will we expand the Smart ID replacement service to 750 branches by the end of this year, but we will shortly also add first-time Smart ID applications, Passport applications, and home deliveries to all of these bank branches.”
A National Call to Action
With the infrastructure now in place, the government is urging the millions of citizens still holding the old paper ID books to make the switch immediately.
“I reiterate my call to the people of South Africa: if you still have a Green ID book, help us to eradicate identity theft that feeds illegal immigration and financial fraud by switching to the Smart ID today,” the Minister urged.
He noted that the collaboration with major financial institutions has removed the traditional barriers to upgrading identity documents.
“Our digital partnership with the banks has made it easier than ever to switch. Just visit dha.gov.za/banks to find your nearest branch and switch today,” Minister Schreiber concluded.
