JOHANNESBURG — Three suspects have been arrested in connection with a mass shooting at the Jumpers Informal Settlement on June 9, 2026, which resulted in 13 fatalities and left 14 victims injured.
Gauteng Provincial Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni mobilized a multi-agency task team to investigate the incident. The team comprised members from the Provincial Murder and Robbery unit, the Provincial Tracking Team, the Krugersdorp Tactical Response Team (TRT), the Johannesburg Local Criminal Record Centre (LCRC), the National Intervention Unit (NIU), and the South African National Defence Force (SANDF).
Acting on intelligence, the task team arrested three Lesotho nationals, aged 26, 32, and 36, on June 23, 2026, at the KwaMaiMai Informal Settlement. During the operation, police recovered more than 100 rounds of 9mm live ammunition from the residence of one of the suspects.
Lieutenant General Mthombeni commended the investigative team for their meticulous work. “This team demonstrated unwavering commitment and exceptional skill in arresting the perpetrators responsible for these heinous murders and attempted murders,” Mthombeni stated. He noted that the investigators worked day and night, sacrificing their comfort and safety, and expressed hope that the arrests would bring solace to the victims’ families.
The three suspects are scheduled to appear before the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court on June 25, 2026, facing charges of murder and attempted murder.
Police investigations remain ongoing as authorities continue to search for additional suspects involved in the shooting.
