The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) has warned of significant traffic disruptions across the Johannesburg inner city, Hillbrow, and Midrand (Glen Austin) on Tuesday, 30 June, due to three legally approved simultaneous marches.
Disruptions are anticipated between 07:00 and 16:00. Integrated law enforcement teams, comprising the JMPD and SAPS Public Order Policing, will be deployed across the city to monitor procession routes, manage traffic flow, and ensure public safety. The deployment aims to maintain law and order and respond swiftly to any spontaneous protests, pickets, or gatherings. Rolling road closures and temporary barricades will be implemented along all approved routes. Motorists are advised to avoid affected streets, use alternative routes, exercise patience, and follow the directions of law enforcement officers.
The first march, organized by March & March, will focus on inner-city safety, youth development, and access to community services. An estimated 5,000 participants will gather at Beyers Naudé Square at 10:00 and march to Constitution Hill, where a memorandum will be handed to the Hillbrow Station Commander. The procession will travel along Helen Joseph Street, Troye Street, Twist Street, Kotze Street, and Queen Street, concluding at 14:00.
The second march, organized by the Labour and Civic Organisation (LACO), will address concerns regarding illegal immigration policies and engage the Department of Home Affairs. Approximately 1,200 participants will assemble at the intersection of Kotze and Hospital streets in Hillbrow at 09:00. They will proceed to the Department of Home Affairs on Plein Street to submit a memorandum. This procession will conclude at 12:00.
The third march, led by the Mayibuye Youth Activism Movement in Midrand, will focus on youth employment opportunities. Around 800 participants will gather at the Dale Road and Modderfontein Road open space at 10:00. They will march to the Sandton Plant Hire Offices to submit a memorandum regarding local employment concerns. The procession will run until 12:00, with dispersal expected at 13:00.
