Khutsong Explosives Arrest: 26-Year-Old Suspect Detained Following Major Seizure

SAPS Public Order Policing unit recovers blasting cartridges, shock tubes, and suspected mercury during a targeted operation at Majimbos Squatter Camp.

GAUTENG — A major Khutsong explosives arrest unfolded on Friday, 03 July 2026, after law enforcement officials uncovered a cache of hazardous materials at an informal settlement. A 26-year-old suspect is now in police custody following the discovery.

Members of the South African Police Service (SAPS), specifically the Public Order Policing (POP) West Rand unit, launched the operation after acting on actionable intelligence. The information led officers directly to a suspect located at Majimbos Squatter Camp in Khutsong.

Upon arriving at the scene, police requested permission to search the premises. Consent was granted by the occupants, allowing officers to conduct a thorough inspection of the property.

During the search, SAPS recovered a significant quantity of dangerous materials. The seized items included 40 blasting cartridges, 25 shock tubes, and a quantity of suspected mercury.

Following the recovery of these items, the 26-year-old suspect was immediately arrested for the possession of explosives. According to SAPS and the POP West Rand unit, the suspect remains in custody as authorities continue to investigate the origin and intended use of the seized materials.
