WESTERN CAPE — A significant Cape Town International Airport drug arrest took place this past weekend when authorities intercepted a passenger carrying over 50 kilograms of suspected narcotics. The operation, executed by border policing officials, underscores ongoing efforts to curb the transportation of illegal substances through major transit hubs.
On Saturday, 4 July 2026, at approximately 12:20, officers attached to the South African Police Service (SAPS) Border Policing unit were conducting routine patrols in the airport’s Central Terminal Building. Acting on intelligence regarding a suspicious individual at one of the departure counters, officers engaged a 46-year-old man.
Following the encounter, police obtained the man’s consent to search his belongings. The search uncovered approximately 50.7 kilograms of suspected khat carefully concealed across three suitcases.
The suspect was immediately apprehended and transported to Ravensmead SAPS, where he was detained on a charge of dealing in drugs. Authorities have not yet determined the estimated street value of the seized consignment, as investigations into the origin and destination of the narcotics remain ongoing.
The accused is scheduled to make his first court appearance at the Bellville Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 6 July 2026.
