South Africa Home Affairs Recruits 301 Immigration Officers to Boost Border Security

Minister Leon Schreiber announces a 35% capacity increase and accelerated digital transformation under the 'Home Affairs @ home' reform agenda.

PRETORIA, Gauteng — The Department of Home Affairs recruits 301 immigration officers in a major push to fortify national border security and expand the country’s frontline enforcement workforce. The strategic hiring initiative, detailed in a departmental statement on Monday, aims to alleviate critical resource shortages and modernize immigration control across South Africa.

Currently operating with a constrained staff of just 868 immigration officers, the department has faced immense pressure to maintain comprehensive border enforcement nationwide. To overcome these severe resource limitations, internal budget reprioritisation was executed to fund the onboarding of the new cohort.

Once the 301 new recruits are integrated, the total number of immigration officers will rise from 868 to 1,169. According to the department, this expansion will deliver a substantial 35% increase in overall enforcement capacity, ensuring better support for immigration law enforcement across the entire country.

This recruitment drive is part of a broader collaborative effort alongside the National Treasury. The partnership is focused on securing further resources to accelerate digital transformation and comprehensive capacity-building initiatives within the ministry.

Minister of Home Affairs, Dr. Leon Schreiber, framed the recruitment as a critical component of the department’s expansive “Home Affairs @ home” reforms. These sweeping changes are engineered to create a secure, fully digitized, and fit-for-purpose immigration framework that strictly serves the national interest.

“The Home Affairs @ home reforms are about building an immigration system that works from beginning to end,” Dr. Schreiber stated. “That means using technology like the Electronic Travel Authorisation to strengthen the enforcement of lawful entry into South Africa, while also investing in the frontline officers who enforce our laws every day.”

Highlighting the magnitude of the hiring initiative, the Minister noted, “By appointing 301 additional immigration officers, we are now making one of the biggest investments in immigration enforcement capacity in years, strengthening our ability to uphold the rule of law and protect the integrity of South Africa’s immigration system.”
