Authorities Make Critical Arrest in Kruger National Park Rhino Poaching Case Following Shootout

A massive manhunt is underway for three fugitives in the Pretoriuskop sector after an armed clash with anti-poaching field rangers.

MPUMALANGA — Authorities have made a critical arrest in a Kruger National Park rhino poaching case following a late-night shootout with field rangers in the Pretoriuskop sector, though three accomplices remain on the run.

The confrontation unfolded at approximately 23:55 on Sunday, July 5, 2026. According to a spokesperson for the South African Police Service (SAPS), Field Rangers were executing a routine observation patrol when they unexpectedly crossed paths with a group of four individuals suspected of hunting rhinos.

The rangers immediately gave chase to intercept the group. The pursuit quickly escalated into an armed exchange of gunfire. During the firefight, one of the suspects was struck by bullets. A spokesperson for park authorities confirmed that the wounded 32-year-old male was apprehended directly at the scene and was found armed with a rifle.

The other three members of the group managed to slip away into the bush, successfully evading capture. As rangers secured the perimeter, they discovered a second firearm discarded just a few meters from the initial clash, which is believed to have been dropped by one of the fleeing men.

Emergency medical personnel transported the injured suspect to a local hospital. He is currently undergoing treatment while being closely monitored by a police guard. Authorities note that he will be brought before a magistrate to face charges as soon as medical professionals clear him to stand trial.

The South African Police Service and park management are jointly leading the ongoing investigation. A spokesperson stated that specialized units are actively tracking the three outstanding suspects to bring them to justice.
