Four-Month-Old Twins Perish in Ikageng Shack Fire

Parents survive with burn injuries after midnight blaze destroys dwelling at Hashtag informal settlement near Potchefstroom.

NORTH WEST — A fatal shack fire in the Hashtag informal settlement has claimed the lives of four-month-old twin infants in Ikageng, near Potchefstroom. The devastating late-night blaze has prompted local authorities to open an inquest as they investigate the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.

Ikageng police spokespersons reported that emergency units were dispatched to the settlement, located close to Potchefstroom, just before midnight on Monday, 6 July 2026. Upon reaching the location, responders discovered that the informal dwelling had already been entirely destroyed by the flames.

The structure’s occupants, an adult man and his wife, sustained significant burn injuries during the incident. Emergency Medical Rescue Services (EMRS) spokespersons confirmed that their teams administered medical treatment to the couple at the scene before transporting them to a local hospital for continued medical care.

While processing the aftermath of the destroyed shack, authorities discovered the charred remains of the couple’s four-month-old twin boys among the debris.

The JB Marks Fire Brigade successfully brought the blaze under control and extinguished the fire. Ikageng police have launched an ongoing investigation into the incident. The exact cause of the fatal fire remains unknown at this time.
