KWAZULU-NATAL — A Durban Metro Police killer has officially been handed a life sentence, bringing a definitive close to the tragic case of Superintendent Errol Ogle. On Wednesday, 15 July 2026, the KwaZulu-Natal Local Division of the High Court in Durban convicted 36-year-old Phakamani Mpanza for the murder of the 52-year-old law enforcement officer, delivering a strong message of legal accountability.
The fatal confrontation unfolded on 20 July 2023 along the M7 highway near the Malvern off-ramp. Superintendent Ogle was attempting to intercept a suspicious truck moving against the flow of traffic when he was ambushed and shot by Mpanza and his accomplices. Investigators later determined that the truck had been hijacked, with its driver held hostage. Amidst the chaos of the shooting, the captive truck driver managed to flee the scene without sustaining any injuries.
Following the attack, the assailants stole Superintendent Ogle’s service firearm and fled in his official, marked Durban Metro VW Polo. The vehicle was eventually located abandoned in Pinetown. The Pinetown Police Station immediately logged a murder and hijacking docket, which was swiftly escalated to the Hawks’ Durban Serious Organised Crime Investigation Unit. Through a coordinated effort with the Durban Metro Police, authorities successfully tracked down and arrested three suspects within a 72-hour window.
The suspects faced a formidable array of charges, including murder, armed robbery, kidnapping, and hijacking. Despite multiple court postponements, the prosecution successfully opposed all bail applications. While one of the original three accused was eventually acquitted, the court convicted the remaining two defendants in March 2026.
The court handed down severe penalties to reflect the gravity of the crimes. Mpanza received a life term for murder, coupled with 15 years for robbery and three years for kidnapping. His co-accused, 45-year-old Mzomuhle Gamede, was handed a cumulative 18-year sentence, comprising 15 years for robbery and three years for kidnapping.
