Absa Integrates Smart ID Services in Major Department of Home Affairs Digital Partnership

As the fourth financial institution to join the national rollout, Absa begins offering secure Smart ID applications, advancing the government’s target of 750 participating branches by late 2026

SOUTH AFRICA – The Department of Home Affairs has achieved a significant milestone in its digital transformation efforts, officially welcoming Absa to its banking sector Digital Partnership Model for Smart ID services. This strategic integration makes Absa the fourth major bank to facilitate secure Smart ID applications, directly supporting the national initiative to phase out the vulnerable green barcoded ID book in favor of the highly secure Smart ID Card.

By joining Capitec, Standard Bank, and First National Bank, Absa expands the national footprint of this initiative to a combined network of 296 participating bank branches. The initial phase of this rollout activates Home Affairs Smart ID services at 12 specific Absa locations, with a structured plan to onboard an additional 60 Absa branches before the conclusion of 2026.

Beyond traditional brick-and-mortar locations, Absa is set to launch “Bank on the Move,” a pioneering mobile service component. This innovation aims to decentralize access and bring secure identification services directly to broader communities, with full operational details slated for release at the upcoming official rollout event.

The collaboration has already yielded substantial results, with the Digital Partnership processing upwards of 385,000 Smart ID applications. This volume highlights a clear public preference for streamlined, digitally driven alternatives to legacy identification methods.

Home Affairs Minister Dr Leon Schreiber emphasized that this accelerated growth validates the department’s modernization strategy. “The rapid expansion of our Digital Partnership with the banking sector demonstrates the success of our vision to fundamentally transform Home Affairs service delivery through digital innovation,” Dr Schreiber stated.

He noted that processing over 385,000 applications within a mere four-month window proves that citizens are actively adopting this faster, more secure, and convenient access model. Operating under the “Home Affairs @ home” reform programme, the department is committed to scaling the Digital Partnership to 750 participating bank branches by the end of the year.

According to Dr Schreiber, combining this aggressive branch expansion with mobile solutions like “Bank on the Move” ensures that dignified, secure access to Smart ID services is brought directly to the communities where South Africans live and work.
