MKHUHLU, Mpumalanga — The Mkhuhlu community in Bushbuckridge, Mpumalanga, has escalated its call for the immediate removal of the Calcutta Police Station leadership, submitting a formal memorandum that highlights a severe breakdown in local law enforcement. Residents allege that the current command structure is actively shielding criminal syndicates rather than protecting the public.
This demand follows an alarming surge in targeted ambushes and fatal shootings across the region. According to community representatives, victims who attempt to report crimes face systemic negligence, with investigators failing to follow up and dockets routinely closed within a month without any official explanation provided to the families.
The human toll has been devastating. Since the beginning of January, 37 individuals have been gunned down in the area, with the most recent fatalities occurring on Sunday of last week. Despite the high volume of homicides, authorities have yet to secure a single arrest or identify a viable suspect.
Local advocates emphasize that this track record of zero breakthroughs fundamentally destroys public trust. “When over 37 murder cases yield no suspects, or when individuals brought in for questioning are promptly released with no further action, it proves we effectively have no functional police station,” a community spokesperson noted, stressing that such negligence completely erodes the confidence residents should be able to place in their local precinct.
In response to the public outcry, a police spokesperson confirmed that the community’s memorandum has been officially received. The spokesperson clarified that any decision regarding the suspension of the station commander now falls under the jurisdiction of the acting provincial commissioner.
While acknowledging that no arrests have been made to date, law enforcement officials assured the public that active investigations are ongoing. The spokesperson highlighted that dedicated detectives and CRM intelligence units are currently deployed and working tirelessly in the area.
Although police have recently intensified their visible patrols in Mkhuhlu to deter further violence, the community has drawn a firm line. Residents have granted the police management exactly seven days to provide a formal, actionable response to the demands outlined in their memorandum.
