FREE STATE — A major Bloemfontein dagga bust in the Willows suburb has resulted in the dismantling of an active drug distribution syndicate and the confiscation of cannabis products valued at R77,400. The raid, which yielded thousands of pre-rolled joints and packaged narcotics, underscores a intensified law enforcement push against local drug trafficking in the Free State.
The breakthrough occurred during Operation Shanela II, a targeted intervention by the Public Order Police Unit, Bloemfontein Platoon 8. According to spokespersons for the police unit, the operation initially began as a routine stop-and-search of a group of young men in the area locally known as the Banda on King Edward Street.
During the search, officers discovered rolled zols and dagga concealed in zip-lock plastics. Following this initial discovery, the individuals cooperated with investigators and directed the police to a nearby residence that was actively functioning as a drug sales hub.
Upon arriving at the targeted King Edward Street address, law enforcement faced a locked door, prompting a tactical breach to gain entry. Inside, the situation quickly escalated. Spokespersons for the Public Order Police Unit detailed that the first suspect, a 26-year-old male, was apprehended while actively trying to flee through a bathroom window. The second suspect, aged 27, was caught just as he was reaching to open a dog kennel containing pit bulls on the property.
A subsequent search of the premises revealed a highly organized, street-level packaging operation. The suspects failed to produce any legal permits for the cultivation, possession, or sale of the substances.
The police inventory uncovered a massive quantity of ready-made narcotics, highlighting the scale of the operation. The seized items were meticulously cataloged and included:
– 2,400 ready-made zols, individually priced at R10
– 472 small, colourful zip bags, priced at R20 each
– 361 transparent zip-lock plastics, priced at R20 each
– 240 alternative zip bags, priced at R10 each
– 80 premium colourful zols, priced at R30 each
– 15 medium zip bags, priced at R50 each
– 34 small packages, priced at R35 each
– A quantity of dagga oil
All confiscated dagga and by-products were counted and sealed into evidence bags in the direct presence of the two suspects. In addition to the narcotics, officers confiscated a sum of cash believed to be the direct financial proceeds from the illicit drug trade.
A formal case docket for dealing in dagga has been registered at the Parkweg Police Station. The two accused individuals are scheduled to make their first appearance in the Bloemfontein Magistrates’ Court in the near future to face charges.
