BARBERTON, Mpumalanga — A mounting crisis over Barberton illegal mining and alleged police collusion has pushed local residents to the brink, with community members openly accusing law enforcement and City of Mbombela officials of enabling criminal syndicates. As corporate investors flee the historic Mpumalanga town, frustrated citizens are demanding immediate, sustained intervention to reclaim their streets and protect the region’s globally recognized heritage sites.
Following a recently concluded community-led operation targeting businesses run by undocumented foreign nationals, local voices are intensifying their demands for the removal of these individuals. Residents argue that the unchecked presence of undocumented workers is directly fueling the area’s soaring crime rates. Consequently, the community is calling on the South African Police Service (SAPS) and the Department of Home Affairs to enforce strict registration and monitoring protocols to ensure all residents are known and accounted for.
Bongani Nongoa Mua, a leading community representative, emphasized that sporadic police raids are wholly inadequate for a town battling entrenched criminal networks. Mua stressed that authorities must actively “frustrate” these syndicates through relentless, daily operations rather than conducting a single raid and remaining inactive for months. He pointed to the local military base, arguing that soldiers should be deployed every day to secure the surrounding mountains. This environmental and economic protection is critical, as Barberton is home to a world heritage site ranked third globally. Ongoing illegal mining operations are actively degrading this landscape, deterring tourism, and scaring off potential investors.
The crisis extends from the mountains into the town center, where residents report a surge in hijacked buildings. Mua asserted that the community possesses tangible proof of these illegal occupations. By cross-referencing their intimate local knowledge with records from the municipal town planner’s office, residents claim to have identified properties that are officially dormant but are currently being operated illegally.
Adding fuel to the fire are grave allegations of insider complicity within the local government. The community is currently investigating reports that a municipal employee, allegedly a Zambian national working in the town planner’s office, is actively identifying abandoned properties and handing them over to undocumented foreigners for illegal occupation. Community intelligence networks are reportedly gathering evidence to verify these claims and expose any bureaucratic corruption.
Despite the community’s desperation, law enforcement authorities have issued a stern warning against vigilantism. Police officials expressed deep concern over residents taking the law into their own hands, drawing parallels to recent unauthorized citizen raids that targeted alleged drug dealers.
