PRETORIA — In a major leadership shift for Africa’s largest asset manager, David Masondo has officially resigned as the chairperson of the Public Investment Corporation (PIC) board, citing a commitment to the national interest and the protection of government employee pensions.
The Deputy Minister of Finance’s exit arrives at a highly volatile moment for the state-owned entity. His departure occurs merely days before a crucial shareholder assembly, where Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana is anticipated to cast a decisive vote regarding the dismissal of the remaining non-executive directors.
Addressing his departure, Masondo firmly defended the collective actions of the board. He emphasized that his tenure was guided by a principled stance to secure the retirement funds of public servants. According to his official statement, the board operated in absolute good faith, focusing on shielding state assets while pushing forward vital institutional recommendations.
This latest development caps a period of severe operational friction within the investment giant. The current instability was largely ignited by the precautionary suspension of PIC Chief Executive Patrick Dlamini. That pivotal move subsequently triggered a domino effect, leading to the abrupt exits of six additional non-executive board members over the past several weeks.
As the state-owned fund navigates this unprecedented governance crisis, all eyes are now on the upcoming shareholder meeting to see how the remaining leadership vacuum will be addressed.
