NORTH WEST — A wanted tavern mass shooting suspect has been arrested and is facing five counts of murder and five counts of attempted murder, a spokesperson for the South African Police Service (SAPS) confirmed. The apprehension marks a significant breakthrough in the fatal incident that left five people dead and five others injured.
The suspect, identified as 27-year-old Lesotho national Thabiso Sholo Potsoko, was taken into custody in connection with the mass shooting at a tavern in Kanana Extension 10, near Orkney. The incident occurred on Saturday night, 30 May 2026, when armed individuals allegedly stormed the establishment and opened fire indiscriminately on the patrons.
According to the SAPS spokesperson, the arrest was the direct result of a highly coordinated, intelligence-driven operation. The collaborative law enforcement effort involved multiple specialized units, including the Provincial Anti-Gang Investigation Unit, North West Crime Intelligence, the Sasolburg Crime Prevention Unit from the Free State, and the North West Tactical Response Team (TRT).
The five survivors who sustained gunshot injuries were treated for their wounds, and the investigation remains actively ongoing as authorities prepare to present the suspect before the courts to face the serious charges.
