JOHANNESBURG, Gauteng — As the final voter registration deadline rapidly approaches, the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) is issuing a critical reminder to all eligible South Africans to secure their democratic participation ahead of the November local government elections. With registration sites scheduled to close promptly at 5:00 pm, this weekend provides the absolute last opportunity for citizens to register or update their civic details.
The rollout of this concluding registration phase has proven highly efficient. An Electoral Commission spokesperson confirmed that more than 99% of the 23,699 designated stations nationwide opened precisely at 8:00 am. This strong, punctual start brings the country significantly closer to finalizing all in-person voter registration activities for this year’s electoral cycle.
Momentum is already evident across the country. By the 12:00 pm midday mark, the commission reported successfully interacting with over 238,000 citizens across both physical locations and the dedicated online portal. This current surge builds directly upon the success of the initial registration weekend in June, which saw more than three million South Africans officially record or update their information.
“We wish to remind all eligible voters that there will not be another opportunity for voting-based registration,” the Electoral Commission spokesperson stressed, underscoring the strict and permanent nature of the upcoming cutoff.
Residents are strongly encouraged to maximize the remaining hours today, as well as tomorrow’s session, to register, verify, and correct their information on the official voters’ roll. The physical stations will suspend operations at 5:00 pm this evening before reopening at 8:00 am tomorrow for the final day of the nationwide initiative.
