NORTH WEST — A coordinated law enforcement sting targeting an **illegal explosives network spanning Rustenburg and Thabazimbi** has resulted in the detention of four individuals and the removal of a dangerous cache of blasting materials from local streets.
The breakthrough occurred on the afternoon of Tuesday, 4 August 2026, when the Tactical Response Team (TRT) acted on highly specific, intelligence-driven tips regarding the illicit sale of volatile goods. Officers swiftly moved in on the Rustenburg Mall parking area, intercepting three individuals. A subsequent search yielded five non-electric detonators, two explosive cartridges, and three cellular phones that investigators believe are tied to the broader syndicate’s communications.
Building on the momentum of the initial mall arrests, the probe rapidly expanded. TRT operatives joined forces with Crime Intelligence to track the supply chain to Thabazimbi. There, authorities apprehended a fourth suspect who was found holding a much larger stash consisting of 29 non-electric detonators.
All four individuals have been formally charged with unlawful possession of explosives, a direct violation of Section 28 of the Explosives Act, 1956 (Act 26 of 1956).
