GAUTENG — Authorities in the West Rand District are processing a major security breach after an undocumented individual was apprehended with a cache of explosive detonators inside a Westonaria mine shaft. The successful interception highlights the ongoing, dangerous reality of illicit subterranean operations in the region.
The high-stakes encounter unfolded on Tuesday, 04 August 2026, during a routine subterranean sweep of the Kloof No. 1 Shaft. While monitoring the depths of Level 25, a two-person security detail noticed an unauthorized light source emanating from a decommissioned, non-active zone of the tunnels.
As the guards approached the restricted sector to investigate the trespassers, two men immediately bolted into the darkness. Following a brief underground foot chase, the patrol successfully cornered and detained one of the fleeing suspects while the other managed to escape.
