MPUMALANGA — An armed suspect is in police custody following a successful stolen vehicle interception by the Middelburg K9 Unit and Anti-Hijacking Team. The early-morning law enforcement operation resulted in the seizure of an illegal firearm, the recovery of suspected stolen goods, and the launch of an ongoing manhunt for two additional suspects.
According to police spokespersons, the incident began at approximately 03:15 on Thursday, 06 August 2026. Officers attached to the Middelburg K9 Unit and the Anti-Hijacking Team were conducting routine patrols along Walter Sisulu Street, traveling in the direction of Kanonkop and Doornkop.
Suspicious Bakkie Triggers Traffic Stop
Upon approaching the intersection of Walter Sisulu and Protea Streets, authorities observed a white Nissan NP1400 bakkie bearing Mpumalanga registration plates allegedly running a red traffic light. The vehicle drew further suspicion because it was heavily loaded with assorted items in its rear compartment. Police officers pursued the bakkie and subsequently effected a stop to conduct a search.
Foot Chase and K9 Deployment
As soon as the vehicle was pulled over, all three occupants alighted and fled on foot into an adjacent open field. Law enforcement spokespersons noted that one of the fleeing individuals was visibly armed. Despite clear verbal instructions to drop the weapon, the suspect refused to comply.
A police K9 unit was immediately deployed to track the individuals and successfully assisted in apprehending the armed suspect. During the arrest, the man sustained minor injuries to his lower right arm and was promptly transported to a local medical facility for treatment.
Farm Burglary Link and Ongoing Manhunt
Preliminary investigations suggest that the intercepted Nissan bakkie, along with the assorted items recovered from the vehicle, were stolen during a recent burglary at a farm located along Stoffberg Road. Police spokespersons confirmed that the farm owner has been contacted and requested to formally identify the recovered property.
Meanwhile, a coordinated search operation remains underway for the two remaining suspects who managed to escape the scene.
Upcoming Court Appearance
The arrested 33-year-old male is scheduled to appear before the Middelburg Magistrate’s Court on 07 August 2026. He currently faces charges of unlawful possession of a firearm and possession of suspected stolen property. Authorities have indicated that as the investigation progresses, additional charges—including burglary and theft—may be added to the docket.
